چکیده

This paper presents a finite element formulation of elasticity to model elastic fracture in composites with long aligned fibers. We have employed a B-bar type approach which is applicable to compressible as well as nearly incompressible material systems. An energy approach is undertaken to evaluate the stress intensity factor at the crack tip. The effects of strong intact bridging fibers, fibers ahead of the crack tip, and that of temperature variation on the reduction in stress intensity factor at the crack tip have been investigated. Various numerical results are presented to show fiber–fiber and fiber–crack interaction. q 1998 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved

A new solution in closed form is obtained for the thermomechanical deformations of an isotropic linear thermoelastic functionally graded elliptic plate rigidly clamped at the edges. The through-thickness variation of the volume fraction of the ceramic phase in a metal–ceramic plate is assumed to be given by a power-law type function. The effective material properties at a point are computed by ...

This paper reviews shearography and its applications for testing of composite structures. Shearography is a laser-based technique for fullfield measurement of surface deformation. Unlike holography, it does not require special vibration isolation; hence it can be employed in field/factory environments. The technique has already received considerable industrial acceptance for nondestructive test...

This paper discusses a summary of analytical modeling as applied to selected smart composites which include piezoelectric composites, shape memory alloy (SMA) fiber composites, and piezoresistive composites. First we discuss the definition of ‘smart materials’ which exhibit coupling among mechanical, thermal and electromagnetic behavior, then the Eshelby’s formulations based on a simple algebra...

A Graph-theoretic Generalization of the Sauer-Shelah Lemma

We show a natural graph-theoretic generalization of the Sauer–Shelah lemma. This result is applied to bound the ‘∞ and L1 packing numbers of classes of functions whose range is an arbitrary, totally bounded metric space. ? 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
